     Thanksgiving Blessings

The turkey has been roasting
since the early morning hour.
The kitchen has been cluttered
with pots and pans and flour.
The table has been set
with so much love and care,
napkins folded carefully
in front of every chair.
And now the table's ready
with all the trimmings fine,
awaiting all the family who's
never been on time.
Through the door they scurry
with a dish in every hand, saying
"Where do you want this?"
and await the host's command.
Gathering 'round the table,
with hands they make a chain
Someone says, "You say it,"
and then prayer is aimed.
"Oh Lord we bow our heads
and humbly do we pray
To thank you for our blessings on this
Thanksgiving Day!"

Poetry written by Janet Spivey, 2009
