     Stealing Candy

Children shopping with their mothers,
shrieking in the narrow aisles,
trying to find the costume perfect.
Amusement fails beneath forced smiles.

Great broomsticks placed in doorways,
witches hats and skeleton faces,
Bring some little ones to tears,
launching relatives to other places.

Candy in the plastic pumpkins,
parents checking malicious actions,
Sugar rushes claim their children.
Parents groan with such reactions.

Off to bed and now it's their turn
to spill the candy on the floor.
Stealing candy from their babies
Has been the ultimate of chores.

Thank goodness it's all over!
No more spooks are to be seen
All the candy has been eaten
from this year's Halloween.

Poetry written by Janet Spivey, 2009
