     A Letter Home

My darling, I am sitting here
Beneath a nightime sky
The battle sounds are silent
I feel like I could cry.
I miss you so, my darling
I think of you each day
My heart is filled with longing
But you are far away.
The guns for a while are silent
My comrades are all asleep
But I'm awake and missing you
And now I've started to weep.
Oh my dearest heart
Each and every day I pray
That I might survive this war
And come safely home some day.
My soul has grown so weary
With this battle that we fight
You are ever on my mind
Every day and night.
Darling, I must close this now
For the sun's beginning to rise
And I must somehow force back the tears
That now fall from my eyes.
Yes, a brand new day is dawning
Another day of war
But I'll keep praying for the day
I hold you in my arms once more.
And if the lord is merciful
And the cruel fates turn kind
Someday all my hopes and dreams
Reality will find.
Forgive the teardrops on this letter
And just know that I love you
And that I'm coming straight back home
When this war is through.
