He rushes into the room
with a grace of his own,
smiling with his eyes
the second they alight on me,
and a golden light glows from
within him,
a beauty of the spirit
that even shines on the tip
of his wagging tail.
He watches me even when
he's lapping water
from his bowl,
always aware of
my every movement,
always listening,
and carrying me
in his thoughts.
Even when he drops to
the floor with a sigh,
he keeps one eye where I am.
And I wonder, as
I have a million times
and probably will
a million times more,
why do these fine creatures
we call "dogs,"
love us so?

"Dogs," written and designed by Bobette Bryan, 2002
